Sue began her career at the William Henry Smith School in 1987, working initially in residential care. Over almost four decades, she has progressed through leadership roles spanning education and care, including Director of Student Achievement, Deputy Principal and Principal, before becoming Chief Executive Officer in 2023. Sue started in her role as Governor on 29th August 2017.
Sue holds a Master’s Degree in Education Leadership and the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH), having studied at the University of Huddersfield. Her leadership is shaped not only by professional learning, but by extensive experience of working alongside children, young adults, families and colleagues.
As CEO, Sue leads the William Henry Smith Foundation across its School & Sixth Form, Specialist College and Therapeutic Children’s Home. At the heart of her leadership is a deeply held belief in the transformational power of relationships, belonging and truly understanding the individual. She is a passionate advocate for psychologically and trauma-informed practice, creating environments where children and young adults feel safe, understood and valued, their strengths are recognised and they are empowered to become the very best they can be.
Sue is equally committed to developing people, strengthening partnerships and sharing expertise beyond the Foundation. Across Calderdale, she is Lead Headteacher and Chair of the Specialist Provision Cluster, bringing specialist schools together to share expertise, strengthen practice and extend support across the wider education community. Her influence extends regionally and nationally through collaboration with sector partners and through her role as Trustee and Chair of Engage in Their Future, championing specialist education and, above all, the children and young adults it serves.
Outside of work, Sue strongly believes in looking after her own wellbeing and bringing the same commitment and discipline to herself that she encourages in others. Strength training and kickboxing are an important part of this, and she is currently working towards achieving her black belt. Most importantly, she values time with her family and particularly loves being a grandmother and making memories with her granddaughter.
