Specialist SEND, SEMH, and inclusion support for schools

Our services span consultation, assessment, training, and whole-school development, drawing on psychological, therapeutic, and educational expertise to improve staff confidence in meeting complex learning needs and improving outcomes for every child.
Building better futures

Strengthening inclusive practice and early intervention

At William Henry Smith Foundation, we believe every child deserves access to customised learning routes that meet their individual needs. This way, they can overcome barriers, learn alongside their peers, and reach their fullest potential. Our specialist services for schools ensure this support is provided early and comprehensively enough – building capacity where resources may be stretched, enhancing existing provisions with targeted expertise, and empowering staff with the confidence they need to meet complex learning needs.

We don’t simply focus on the signs a child is presenting with and suggest tick-box training solutions. Instead, we work alongside professionals in special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), as well as social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs, to understand why difficulties may be occurring – considering the wider context of relationships, communication, sensory needs, trauma, and family systems. From there, we coordinate the right range and depth of support, enabling them to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

SPECIALIST EXPERTISE

Sharing a wide network of knowledge

Some organisations seek end-to-end guidance, such as special educational needs coordinator (SENCO) support to identify pupils with additional needs, coordinate targeted interventions, and guide teachers on inclusive practices. Others request expert knowledge to navigate a specific area of development, from nurturing speech and language in schools to using psychological assessments and therapies to support emotional and behavioural difficulties. Whatever you require, our pool of professional partners is vast, varied, and exceptional at what they do.

Our multidisciplinary team includes:

  • Specialist teachers and SENCO leaders

  • Inclusion and SEND leadership consultants

  • Occupational therapists and advanced sensory integration practitioners

  • Systemic family therapists, family counsellors, and social workers

  • Speech and language therapists

  • Clinical and educational psychologists

  • Creative psychotherapists

  • Health and wellbeing nurses

  • Positive behaviour specialists

Where we can support

We provide a range of complex needs support for schools, multi-academy trusts, local authorities, and organisations. Combining specialist SEND expertise with therapeutic, relational, and systemic practice, our approach is designed to help schools embed inclusivity, meet Ofsted standards with confidence, and act on emotional and behavioural needs early. Plus, with our bespoke training support, you can build the internal capabilities required to sustain progress long after our involvement ends.

Building a deep understanding of a child is essential to developing the right learning and intervention path, and our specialist assessments for schools help to shape this essential picture. Delivered by highly qualified practitioners – including educational and clinical psychologists, psychotherapists, nurses, and consultants – each assessment uses psychological evaluations and clinical diagrams to identify the underlying causes of a child's presentation, providing a written report with recommendations to guide the next steps in their support. They are not intended to replace statutory or diagnostic pathways, but to give staff genuine clarity beyond surface-level behaviours, so they can make informed decisions with confidence.

Our assessment services include:

  • Cognitive evaluations led by educational psychologists, such as SEMH assessments and neurodevelopmental screening, to understand barriers to engagement and progress – supporting across areas such as SEND, SEMH, autism, ADHD, behaviour, inclusion, and wider developmental needs, as well as contributing to statutory assessment and education, health, and care plan (EHCP) processes where appropriate

  • Clinical psychology and psychotherapy assessments – covering areas such as anxiety, trauma, attachment, emotional regulation, and complex behaviour –  to help understand the factors affecting a young person’s wellbeing and implement appropriate support

  • Sensory needs assessments and communication needs assessments, identifying how a child experiences their environment and any hidden speech, language, or communication difficulties that demand attention

  • Occupational therapy in schools, evaluating a child's sensory, motor, and functional skills to identify barriers to participation in classroom activities and daily school life

Every child's behaviour tells a totally unique story, and often the best way to read it is with an expert alongside you. Our systemic consultation for schools helps staff step back from behaviour-focused responses and look instead at the bigger picture – including the family relationships, lived experiences, and wider systems shaping a child's presentation. This shift marks an important transition from reactive intervention to proactive and informed decision making across the entire learning experience.

Our school consultancy services include:

  • Case consultation, offering formulation-based advice on individual children, families, or teams, whether that's for behaviour support strategies, transition planning, or EHCP evidence

  • Staff supervision, providing hands-on SENCO support, SEND leadership coaching, and reflective guidance for pastoral teams, behaviour leads, and therapists, so those with statutory responsibility feel supported at every step

Real, lasting change happens when adults feel confidently equipped rather than simply informed. This is the thinking behind our SEND training for teachers – bespoke programmes shaped around each school's specific needs, so staff walk away with skills they can put into practice immediately. Meanwhile, our SEND support for multi-academy trusts keeps inclusivity standards consistent across every setting.

Training topics may include:

  • SEMH and behaviour, including trauma-informed training and emotional regulation training for schools, attachment-aware practice, relational behaviour approaches, and the window of tolerance

  • Communication and interaction, helping staff understand behaviour as communication, embed language-informed practice, and build emotionally safe environments where pupils feel a genuine sense of belonging

  • Sensory and physical development, covering sensory regulation and integration, fine and gross motor development, and how the physical environment shapes participation

  • Strategic SEND and SEMH leadership, SENCO development, and improving the systems that underpin genuinely inclusive schools

Training can be delivered as twilight sessions, half days or full days, depending on what works for your school calendar and your staff's capacity.

Inclusion is not a one-time deliverable, but a provision that’s intentionally built through everyday decisions across multidisciplinary teams. Our whole-school SEND support helps schools develop high-quality support across their entire organisation, embedding practice that lasts well beyond any single project or inspection cycle.

Areas of support include:

  • Strategic and policy development, covering SEND strategy development, behaviour policy review, graduated response implementation, and EHCP process development, giving schools a clear and coherent framework for supporting pupils at every stage

  • Ofsted readiness, including our dedicated SEND Ofsted preparation, helping leaders evidence genuinely embedded practice through provision maps and graduated response documentation, rather than losing sleep over last-minute paperwork

  • Inclusion audits for schools, assessing enabling environments and provision quality, with a specialist focus on sensory and communication culture, classroom layouts, sensory regulation spaces and predictability, physical access, and safety across the setting

  • SEND provision audits, reviewing graduated response, behaviour support systems, intervention programmes, and staff training needs to build a clear picture of where provision is strong and where the biggest opportunities lie

Every piece of work ends with a written report and practical recommendations, so insight turns into action your team can confidently progress with.

Taking safeguarding seriously

Whether it’s an occupational therapist for schools, a speech and language therapist, or a family counsellor, safeguarding always comes first. Every practitioner we work with is subject to rigorous vetting, professional accreditation, and ongoing supervision, giving you complete confidence in the people working alongside your pupils and staff.

Our practice principles

Whatever the remit, we're guided by honesty and integrity in everything we do. We lead with curiosity, always asking why, so we can understand the whole child behind the behaviour rather than settling for surface-level answers. Then, we make recommendations informed by evidence and experience, working alongside families, schools, and professionals to ensure a truly collaborative and cohesive approach. Our support is truly unrivalled, with comprehensive expertise across a diverse range of disciplines – including clinical and educational psychologists, specialised therapists, nurses, family counsellors, social workers, consultants, and beyond. And, because we know SEND training for schools is never a one-size-fits-all solution, we provide tailored packages to make sure you can always find the right fit.
