Appointment of New Co-Principals

The William Henry Smith Foundation has announced a significant evolution in its leadership structure with the appointment of Karl Adamski and Leanne Clarke as Foundation Co-Principals from September 2026.

The appointments mark an important milestone in the Foundation's long-term leadership succession strategy and reinforce its commitment to delivering outstanding education, care, health and therapeutic support for children and young adults with complex needs.

Karl Adamski and Leanne Clarke were appointed following a comprehensive leadership development process, which included presentations to governors, trustees and senior leadership, alongside the successful completion of the National Professional Qualification for Executive Leadership (NPQEL).

As a Foundation, we have never been afraid to challenge traditional thinking when we believe there is a better way of serving our children and young people. Our Co-Principal model reflects that philosophy. By bringing together complementary strengths, shared accountability and collaborative leadership, we are strengthening our capacity to continue delivering exceptional outcomes while ensuring the Foundation remains resilient and well positioned for the future.

Chief Executive Officer, Sue Ackroyd

Under the new structure, Karl Adamski and Leanne Clarke will assume responsibility for the day-to-day leadership of the Foundation, providing strategic oversight across its education, care, health and therapy services.

The changes also see Sue Ackroyd's role evolve as she continues as Chief Executive Officer, focusing on the Foundation's strategic leadership, working closely with governors and trustees to shape its future direction and support its continued growth.

The Foundation has stressed that the changes are part of a planned succession strategy designed to strengthen leadership capacity while maintaining continuity for children, young adults and their families.

"While titles may change, what remains constant is our unwavering commitment to our values and our purpose. These changes will not affect the day-to-day experience of our children and young adults. Instead, they strengthen the leadership of the Foundation and ensure we continue to provide the exceptional education, care, health and therapy that our communities rightly expect."

The appointments come as the William Henry Smith Foundation continues to develop its specialist provision and invest in sustainable leadership for the future. The Co-Principal model is intended to build on the Foundation's collaborative culture, ensuring it remains well placed to meet the evolving needs of learners, families, commissioners, partners and the wider community.

Karl and Leanne are exceptional leaders who embody everything the Foundation stands for. Alongside our Strategic Leadership Team and dedicated staff, I am excited about this next chapter and all that we will continue to achieve for the children, young adults and families we are privileged to serve.

Sue Ackroyd

The new leadership structure will take effect from September 2026.
